(The Center Square) – The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois has expanded its permanent injunction against the Illinois Interchange Fee Prohibition Act to include federal credit unions.
A statement from the Electronic Payments Coalition said the ruling leaves Illinois-chartered community banks and credit unions increasingly isolated, subjecting them to a state mandate that many of their federally chartered and out-of-state competitors do not face.
The law banning swipe fees on the sales tax and tip portions of electronic payments is scheduled to take effect on July 1, 2027 after twice being pushed back by the General Assembly.
Last week, President Donald Trump promised that Congress would pass a bill to eliminate what he called “out-of-control” credit card swipe fees.
FOREIGN NATIONAL ADMITS TO ASSAULT OF ICE AGENT
A Colombian national unlawfully present in the United States pleaded guilty on Tuesday to one count of assaulting a federal agent on Interstate 64 in St. Louis.
Prosecutors said Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested Jhon Fredy Blanco Rodriguez, 22, during a traffic stop when he admitted to being in the country illegally and smoking marijuana.
During the drive, Blanco Rodriguez allegedly kicked a rear window outward. A scuffle ensued after the officer who was driving pulled over to the shoulder of the interstate, and Blanco Rodriguez allegedly kicked the officer repeatedly. Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 16.
METRO EAST MEN ADMIT TO CARJACKING, SHOOTING AT TROOPER
Three men from Illinois have admitted carjacking a driver in downtown St. Louis and shooting at an Illinois State Police trooper who was pursuing them in January 2024.
Davon McLorn, 32, of Madison County pleaded guilty Tuesday in U.S. District Court in St. Louis on Tuesday. Kasey Richardson, 30, of Belleville previously pleaded guilty and is scheduled to sentenced on Nov. 17. Abduelah Jones, 28, of East St. Louis also pleaded guilty and is serving a 73-month prison sentence.
Prosecutors said McLorn forcibly removed the victim from his 2013 Nissan Sentra near Convention Plaza and North 7th Street, stole his wallet, cell phone and car and fled with the other suspects across the Eads Bridge into Illinois.
When a state trooper tried to conduct a traffic stop, McLorn and his companions fired about six times, striking the windshield and other parts of the police cruiser.
SIMONE BILES SAYS HER PORSCHE WAS STOLEN IN CHICAGO
Eleven-time Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles said she and her husband, Jonathan Owens, were shopping for a new car after three masked men came to their house in Chicago and stole her Porsche GTS.
In a social media post on Tuesday, Biles said the incident happened in the last few months before the couple left the city. Owens formerly played for the Chicago Bears, but is now a member of the Indianapolis Colts.
Biles said the vehicle was recovered, but the incident is one of the reasons the couple got a Doberman.
