(The Center Square) – Milwaukee’s election managers are sounding the alarm over voter registration forms that some voters are getting in the mail.
The Milwaukee Election Commission took to social media on Sunday to tell voters the forms are not official and not from the commission.
“It has come to our attention – via over a hundred phone calls and emails – that many voters throughout the city have received mailings that include partially pre-filled voter registration forms. These are not official election mail; they are outreach from third-party voter registration groups,” the commission wrote in a post.
The forms allow people to “update” their voter registration. But the election commission said that’s not necessary. Once you are registered to vote in Wisconsin you only need to update your registration if you move, change your name or haven’t voted in four or more years.
The Milwaukee Election Commission said the pre-filled forms do not appear to be malicious or illegal.
"While these mailings are often well-intentioned, they can be confusing for voters who are already registered and may include outdated or incorrect information. If you are already registered at your current address, please disregard these mailings," the commission added.
The Wisconsin Elections Commission said the deadline to register for the Nov. 3 election is Oct. 30. But the state also allows voters to register at the polls on Election Day.
Milwaukee’s elections office said anyone who has questions about their voter registration should check the state’s voter registration website.
"Voters only need to update their registration if they have moved, changed their name, or have not voted in four or more years," Milwaukee's Election Commission explained. "You can verify your current voter registration by visiting www.MyVote.wi.gov and clicking My Voter Info.
